Symptom Management Workshops

Fatigue Management Workshops

These workshops, run by MS Specialist Nurses are held periodically. Fatigue Management Workshops are an excellent resource for those people with MS who experience chronic fatigue. It's been estimated that around 97% of MS patients experience this debilitating symptom. The aim of the workshop is to teach coping strategies to help minimise the effects of fatigue on daily living.

Fatigue can be a very difficult symptom to explain to family and friends, so for that reason, people with MS are invited to bring members of their family or a friend along with them to the workshop. It can be extremely helpful for family and friends to have a clear explanation and discription of fatigue from a healthcare professional.

The workshops are a good opportunity to meet others who are experiencing similar symptoms.

Forthcoming Fatigue Management Workshop: Friday 23rd March 10am - 12noon

If you would like to take part please contact the Centre on 01227 470 876.

Cognition Management Workshop

Cognition refers to memory and thinking. It describes the way we:

  • focus, maintain and divide attention
  • learn and remember new things
  • think, reason and solve problems
  • plan, carry out and monitor our own activities
  • understand and use language
  • recognise objects, assemble things together and judge distances

Not everyone with MS experiences problems with congnition but mild difficulties are common. The Cognition Workshops run by an MS Specialist Nurse will teach a person how to manage this symptom more effectively. This workshop is also open to the families and friends of people with MS. If you would like more information or you would like to take part, please call the Centre.

Expert Patients Programme

The Expert Patients Programme (EPP) is a self management programme for people who are living with a long-term health condition. The aim is to support people by:

  • increasing their confidence
  • improving their quality of life
  • helping them manage their condition more effectively

The EPP is a NHS initiative that was launched in 2002 to help patients with a long-term health condition to take control of their lives. The EPP is a lay-led programme, delivered by trained tutors. The basis of the programme is a training course that teaches people how to manage their condition by using five core skills:

  • problem solving
  • decision making
  • making the best use of resources
  • developing effective partnerships with healthcare providers
  • taking appropriate action

These programmes are run by the NHS on an annual basis at the Centre. To find out more, or to check if there is a programme running in your area call Jane Reynolds on 01233 667808 or check out the EPP website at www.eckcommunityservices.nhs.uk
