I've chosen to run the Brighton marathon for the Kent Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre for several reasons.
From the offset, my decision was influenced by a personal affiliation I have with the facility and all the staff in Canterbury. Coming from Hythe, I have visited on many occasions with my close family as we helped my mum come to terms with a debilitating neurological condition that took over her life about 7 years ago. Whilst she was still capable, my mum regularly used the hyperbaric oxygen chamber and would visit at weekends to socialise with friends and take part in the local fundraising events. Many people that my mum and I met here have become close family friends and I would hope that running the Brighton Marathon will help me raise funds that will directly benefit those that still use the centre and those that will need to in the future.
Despite the fact that my mum is no longer capable of using the facilities, the centre continues to offer support to my family who continue to visit regularly. Recently, my mum has been moved into full time care at Bethany House in Dymchurch and I can't stress enough how grateful we are for the platform of continual support that was readily available whilst she was still mobile. I Know my mum misses everyone at the centre and would want to give something back for the help that she received – I hope trying to raise £1,000 will help in doing so.
After conducting some initial research, it also shocked me to discover that the centre is entirely self funded without government or core financial support. I hope that my efforts can help contribute to the running costs, maintenance and improvement of an irreplaceable facility that does so much good in the local community. The fact that they have touched and helped so many local lives from a 27 year old porta-cabin is testament to the selfless work ethic and character of all of those associated with the centre. Again, I hope that running the marathon will help raise finance and awareness to support a special place that brings relief and counsel to those in need.
On another note, having completed 5 marathons in the past, I intend to try and set a personal best record in Brighton and will be aiming to finish in under 3 hours 15 minutes.
Please help me reach the target!
